Previous Board Members

Previous Board Members have made a valuable contribution to the Trust. They include: Belinda Cullen, Professor Gary Jones, Professor John Langford AM, Mike Logan, Robert Purves AM, Dr John Williams, Dr Sarina Loo and Dr Kirsten Shelly.

Professor John Langford AM

Professor Langford AM is the Director of UniWater, a major research collaboration between the University of Melbourne and Monash University. He was Chair of the boards of the CRCs for Freshwater Ecology and Catchment Hydrology, and has been Executive Director of the Water Services Association of Australia (the peak body of the Australian urban water industry), and Managing Director of the Rural Water Corporation, Victoria’s statewide irrigation and rural water authority.

Dr John Williams

Dr John Williams is a founding member of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. He has extensive experience in providing national and international thought leadership in natural-resource management, particularly in agricultural production and its environmental impact. John retired recently after nearly six years as Commissioner of the NSW Natural Resources Commission. He is Director of John Williams Scientific Services Pty Ltd, which provides strategic advice and analysis in agriculture and the natural resource sciences.

Dr Sarina Loo

Dr Sarina Loo (2011-2014) Manager, Catchment Governance at Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning Melbourne. Sarina oversees the governance of the 10 Victorian Catchment Management Authorities and the Victorian Catchment Management Council. Prior to this Sarina was Director, River and Wetland Health Department of Environment and Primary Industries. Sarina was a lecturer of post-graduate studies at Swinburne University of Technology and has been an independent consultant to government and private business. Sarina was on the Board of the Society for Conservation Biology - Australasian section. Sarina completed the inaugural Peter Cullen Trust Leadership Program in 2010.


Dr Kirsten Shelly

Dr Kirsten Shelly is a Senior Adviser in the Government of Victoria with lead responsibility for the Water portfolio in the office of the Hon. Lisa Neville MP the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water. Kirsten was formerly Director Water Strategies Queensland in the Queensland Government Department of Energy and Water Supply, after similarly senior roles in the Queensland Water Commission and (in 2012) in the office of the Minister for Energy & Water Utilities in Queensland.


Mr Mike Logan

Mike Logan is a leading practitioner of sustainable agriculture, irrigation and water management in Australia. Mike’s belief that there is scope to inclusively improve the performance of both farm production and environmental outcomes has led him into many off-farm leadership roles. He is a fellow of the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation, and has served on numerous Boards, Management Committees and Advisory Committees, such as for Land and Water Australia, the CRC for Irrigation Futures, the Cotton Research and Development Corporation, the National Groundwater Technical Advisory Committee, and the panel advising on water buy-backs by the federal government.

Mr Robert Purves AM

Robert Purves AM, business man, investor and environmentalist, owns pastoral properties in southern NSW and Northern Territory. He is a member of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, the Chairman of Environment Business Australia, the immediate past President of WWF Australia and a former board member of WWF International. In 2004 Robert established the Purves Environmental Fund.

Ms Belinda Cullen

Ms Belinda Cullen is Peter’s daughter. Rather than follow in her father’s footsteps she is working in
financial planning where a six week data entry job in 2002 has unexpectedly turned into a career. Belinda worked as a paraplanner with Parker Financial Services from 2004, and she is half way through a Masters of Applied Finance and looking forward to seeing where this might lead.
Belinda has been involved in a wide range of volunteer work. She spent three years as a trainer at the Warehouse Circus in Canberra. During this time she performed with the troupe in several shows. She has also worked extensively with Christian youth camps and spent time working overseas with a Christian mission’s organization.
Her father has instilled in her a love for Australia, an awareness of environmental issues and the
understanding that your work should be more than just a job.

Professor Gary Jones

Professor Gary Jones is Chief Executive of eWater Ltd, and previously of eWater Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) and the CRC for Freshwater Ecology. Gary Jones has extensive experience of issues in environment and water science and management, including ecological management, river-flow management, and the management of knowledge generated by scientific research organisations. Since 2002 Professor Jones has been a member of, or Chaired, the Boards of a range of influential water and environment research or advisory bodies.
